___What repentance can do with a person
John 13.37
Peter
First moment - "But why cannot I go now?" Asked Peter, "I am ready to die for the Lord."
We are well aware of numerous passages like Peter was during Jesus' ministry on earth. Peter has always been known for being brash and impulsive. We see demonstrations of all types when examining the attitudes of Peter, but at one point declaring the love felt by Peter Lord and was confronted Peter denied Jesus. The Bible says that, after denying the Lord Jesus for the third time Peter went away and wept bitterly. He not only wept, mourned. He wept bitterly. Tears of repentance are like that, are bitter. And Peter proved the bitter taste that repentance is, but its bitter taste becomes very sweet after receiving forgiveness.
With forgiveness we can seek a new beginning, an opportunity to build a new ending to a story already in progress.
Take a few moments of Peter before his repentance.
1. "And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if thou, bid me come unto thee on the water." (Matthew 14: 28)
2. "And Peter took the word, said: Explain to us this parable." (Matthew 15: 15)
3. "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." (Matthew 16: 16)
4. "But he turned and said to Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan, that became my offense, because the things that are God's, but those that be of men." (Matthew 16: 23)
5. "And Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, Lord, Depart from me, I am a sinful man." (Luke 5: 8)
In these five moments of Peter we can see how it was one person who could not maintain a standard. In the first text even believe that Peter who was walking on the sea Jesus was not believed that Jesus had power enough for such an act. In the second text Peter is not able to understand a parable that Jesus told. In the third Peter is able to give a statement acknowledging all the divine side of Jesus, but the fourth time he is rebuked by Jesus when he saw not able to see the Christ the Redeemer that lay ahead. In the last text Peter acknowledges all holiness of Christ and all his sinful condition.
But in Peter's life there is a passage that goes unnoticed. In John 21 15 to 17, have risen Jesus asks Peter three times: "Peter, do you love me?". Peter answers that Jesus loved. But if you look at the dialogue as written in the Greek we find that Jesus uses the word phileo agapao while Peter uses. It is as if Jesus asked: "Peter, you love me?" And Peter answered, "Yes Jesus, I like you.
Peter knew that this was not what Jesus wanted to hear him, and the third time he asks Jesus responds: "Lord, thou knowest all things. You know I like you ". It was still far from an answer that Christ expected, but sincere, coming from the bottom of a contrite heart he denied the Master.
Finally I want to make a few moments of Peter after this wonderful encounter with Christ.
1. "And Peter said to them: Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2: 38)
2. "Then Peter said, I have no silver or gold, but I have give I thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk." (Acts 3: 6)
3. "Responding But Peter and John, they said, you judge whether it is right before God, before you listen to you than God" (Acts 4: 19)
If you examine the text carefully you will see the wonderful transformation of Peter. It so happens that when a man repents of his sins and surrender your life totally to Jesus.
A man will never be the same person every day. A man without Jesus will always be worse tomorrow than it was today. A man with Jesus will always be better day after day.
